Like most people, I spend some time at Google’s keyword tool trying to dig up untappoed keywords to drill profitable new holes in a market. And while I like this free tool, the real work starts when I get a few keywords that catch my interest.
After all, while it’s nice to have a keyword that gets 4000 exact searches per month, that’s just one metric out of many that will qualify it for targeting in a marketing campaign. Beyond the raw seacrch numbers, I need to know how profitable the word is. That means I have to go elsewhere to find the advertiser demand and cost-per-click for the word. That means trips to Google traffic estimator, other SEO and Adwords sites, and visits to geo-specific results in Google to see what ads there are in the results. Then I will use software to check that they are going after this keyword and what they are paying. I will also have to visit websites to see if they are specifically targeting the keyword, or if they landed in the top results inadvertently. I will need appraisals of they keyword, and will have to learn if it is a buyer’s keyword or just a web surfer’s keyword. And there’s much more. And, I am still missing great keywords that happent to have lower exact searches of 600 or 700 per month. In some high cap business, 600 or 700 new customers per month would be an extraordinary windfall.
Checking out one keyword can take a half and hour if done thoroughly, and I am usually looking at dozens or even hundreds of keywords. And I don’t want to shortcut this because poor keyword choice will make all the following work of content creation, website building and domain buying pointless.
Now, I’m as cheap as the next guy. Cheaper, probably. So with all the free tools, I put off any automation for a long time. But, I realized the time I was spending on keywords was time I could use to make more money elsewhere. I might still have been too cheap had Market Samuria not been offering a free trial. A real free trial, not the kind that asks your credit card number and hopes you forget to cancel before the trial period ends.
I found that the software let me rip through the keywords with sharper analysis skills than I had ever used – and in a fraction of the time. I felt a bit stupid for not getting it sooner.
The thing is, time is money. In fact, time is also family and personal life. And it’s irreplaceable. I need all I can to get a jump ahead, and a small amount of money bought me a whole lot more time as well as better keyword analysis results.
